Purpose and Scope
Walpole Youth Basketball Association (WYBA) is committed to providing a safe, respectful and development-focused basketball environment. This Policy establishes the behavior expected of players, coaches, parents, guardians, spectators, volunteers, coordinators and all other people participating in or attending WYBA activities.
This policy applies to practices, games, tryouts, tournaments, team activities, facilities and surrounding areas, and communications connected to WYBA, whether an event is conducted by WYBA, MetroWest Basketball League or another affiliated organization. Participation and attendance are privileges conditioned on compliance with this Policy, facility requirements and applicable league rules.
MetroWest rules establish minimum requirements for league competition. WYBA may adopt and enforce stricter standards. When an applicable league or facility rule is stricter than this Policy, the stricter rule controls.
Standards for Everyone
Everyone covered by this Policy must:
- Place the emotional and physical well-being of youth participants ahead of winning, personal recognition or adult preferences.
- Treat players, coaches, officials, volunteers, opponents and spectators with dignity and respect.
- Model sportsmanship, self-control, honesty, fairness and respect for the rules.
- Use positive, age-appropriate language and avoid conduct that humiliates, intimidates or undermines another person.
- Follow directions from officials, coaches, site managers, facility personnel and authorized WYBA representatives promptly.
- Help prevent escalation, protect youth participants from adult conflict and report serious safety or conduct concerns through the appropriate process.
The following conduct is prohibited:
- Threatening, taunting, bullying, harassing, intimidating or confronting another person.
- Profanity, obscene gestures, discriminatory conduct or comments based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability or another protected status.
- Physical aggression, fighting, unwanted contact, throwing objects, property damage or any threat of violence.
- Possessing or using alcohol, cannabis or illegal drugs at youth events, or attending while impaired.
- Retaliating against anyone who makes a good-faith report or participates in a review.
Coach Responsibilities
Coaches hold a position of trust and are expected to set the behavioral standard for their teams. Every coach must:
- Lead in a manner demonstrating that WYBA exists for the benefit, development and enjoyment of its players.
- Place player safety and emotional well-being ahead of performance, playing results or a personal desire to win.
- Model good sportsmanship and prohibit trash talking, dirty play, deliberate roughness and conduct that undercuts a player’s self-esteem.
- Support officials and refrain from derogatory comments, excessive arguing, demonstrative reactions or unnecessary sideline behavior.
- Manage the bench and take reasonable, proactive steps to address misconduct by players and team spectators.
- Recognize signs of escalation and work calmly with officials, opposing coaches and site personnel to protect the players’ experience.
- Promote an appropriate postgame exchange and prevent confrontations after the game.
- Address reported incidents only through the WYBA coordinator or Board and never confront or directly contact an official, opposing player or opposing family about an incident.
Player Responsibilities
Every player must:
- Treat teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and spectators as the player would want to be treated.
- Play fairly, follow the rules and never cheat or deliberately endanger another person.
- Avoid unnecessary roughness, dirty play, trash talking, taunting and abusive or discriminatory language.
- Control emotions and behavior, accept officiating and coaching decisions, and respond appropriately to correction.
- Represent the team, family and WYBA with good sportsmanship before, during and after events and in team-related communications.
Parent, Guardian and Spectator Responsibilities
Parents, guardians and spectators must remember that WYBA participants are children learning a game, developing skills and learning how to compete as teammates. Every parent, guardian and spectator must:
- Encourage effort, teamwork, resilience, learning and good sportsmanship regardless of the score or a player’s role.
- Recognize that mistakes, awkward contact and imperfect decisions are normal parts of youth sports.
- Applaud good play by both teams and never ridicule, scold or publicly criticize a child for a mistake.
- Allow coaches to coach and officials to officiate without sideline instruction, repeated criticism or interference.
- Remain outside the court, bench, scorer’s table, locker room and other restricted areas unless authorized.
- Avoid approaching or following an official, coach, player or family to dispute a call or decision.
- Take responsibility for family members and guests attending on the parent’s or guardian’s behalf.
Raising Concerns
Except for an immediate safety issue, no one should confront a coach, official, player or another family during or immediately after an event. Concerns should be raised calmly with the head coach after an appropriate cooling-off period. If the issue involves the head coach, remains unresolved or concerns serious misconduct, contact the appropriate WYBA coordinator or the WYBA Board. Officials’ judgment calls are not subject to parent or spectator protest.
ZERO TOLERANCE Policy regarding Post-Game Interactions:
No coach, player, parent, guardian or spectator may approach an official or another participant at the conclusion of a game for anything other than a positive remark or appropriate handshake. This includes requesting an explanation of a disputed ruling or call. A person who believes misconduct occurred must use the reporting process in this Policy.
Social Media Policy
This section applies to coaches, players, parents, and spectators, using social media or other electronic platforms in connection with WYBA or an affiliated league.
- Do not post, share or endorse direct or implied content that threatens, harasses, humiliates or makes a negative, critical or derogatory reference to a specific player, coach, official, volunteer, spectator, team or affiliated organization.
- Do not publicly criticize officiating or use electronic platforms to dispute calls, identify officials or encourage others to target an official.
- Do not record, post or distribute abusive, humiliating or personally targeted content involving youth participants or program personnel.
- Good-faith concerns submitted privately through the reporting process are not prohibited by this section. Positive, factual and respectful team communications are permitted.
Game Management and Directions to Leave
Officials are responsible for managing conduct during games and may act in the order they consider appropriate. Depending on the circumstances, an official may issue an informal or formal warning, assess a technical or unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty, direct a coach or spectator to leave, suspend play, or end the game. Multiple spectator penalties may cause a game to be cancelled under applicable league rules. These actions need not be imposed sequentially.
A person directed to leave by an official, coach, site manager, facility representative or authorized WYBA representative must leave the gym and surrounding event area immediately and without argument. The person may not relocate elsewhere in the facility, wait near an exit or continue the confrontation in the parking area. Failure to leave may cause the game to be delayed, ended or forfeited and may result in facility security or police being contacted.
If the removed spectator is responsible for a participating child and no other authorized adult is available, the child may also be required to leave the event to ensure proper supervision or allow play to resume safely. In cases involving serious or repeated misconduct, refusal to leave, or an attempt to evade a spectator suspension, the WYBA Board may also suspend the associated player from one or more future games or events.
Minimum Consequences
The following are minimum consequences. WYBA, MetroWest, an event organizer or a facility may impose a more serious consequence based on the nature, severity or pattern of conduct. A penalty imposed during a game does not prevent additional review or discipline.
| Violation or Event | Minimum Consequence |
|---|---|
| Coach or player game ejection | Automatic suspension from the next scheduled league game, plus any additional action required by league rules or imposed after review. |
| Spectator ejection | Suspension from all WYBA games and related events for the remainder of that season, including playoffs and postseason tournaments. The restriction applies at home and away venues and includes the facility and surrounding event area. |
| Prohibited postgame interaction | One-game suspension for a first offense and suspension for the remainder of the season for a second offense. Additional action may be imposed after review. |
| Social media or electronic-communication violation | One-game suspension for a first offense. A second offense may result in removal from the league or WYBA program, with the restriction applied to the person’s role as a coach, player, volunteer or spectator. |
| Severe conduct | Threats, violence, discriminatory harassment, stalking, refusal to leave, retaliation, or conduct creating a material safety risk may result in an immediate interim suspension and a longer or permanent ban, even without a prior offense. |
For purposes of this Policy, a spectator ejection is documented when ordered by a game official, site or facility representative, or authorized WYBA representative and reported to WYBA. Documented ejections from prior seasons count toward the all-seasons total when WYBA has reliable documentation. A suspended person may not attend in another role, enter another part of the facility, or use another person to circumvent the restriction.
Reporting and Review
- Report promptly. Coaches, officials, volunteers and witnesses should report an ejection, threat, discriminatory conduct, physical incident, prohibited postgame interaction, material social-media violation or other serious disruption to WYBA as soon as practicable, preferably within 24 hours.
- Preserve facts. The report should identify the date, location, teams, people involved, witnesses, official or site action, and a factual description. Relevant messages, screenshots or video may be submitted; youth privacy must be respected.
- Use the proper channel. Coaches, players, parents and spectators must work through the appropriate WYBA coordinator or Board representative. They must not contact game officials, league officials, opposing players or opposing families directly about an incident unless authorized.
- Review. WYBA may contact officials, coaches, facility staff, league representatives and witnesses. The subject of a proposed sanction will ordinarily receive notice of the concern and a reasonable opportunity to respond.
- Interim action. WYBA may impose an immediate temporary restriction while reviewing a matter when reasonably necessary for safety, orderly operations or compliance with facility or league requirements.
- Written decision. WYBA will communicate a material suspension or restriction in writing, including its scope and duration, and will maintain an appropriate internal record.
Enforcement Principles
- This Policy will be applied consistently without regard to a player’s skill, team status or a family’s relationship with WYBA.
- A child will not ordinarily be punished for an adult’s disagreement or misconduct. Safety, supervision, applicable league rules, serious or repeated behavior, refusal to leave and deliberate attempts to evade a spectator restriction may require a different result.
- WYBA may consider severity, safety risk, prior incidents, acceptance of responsibility, cooperation, impact on others and compliance with earlier restrictions.
- Nothing in this Policy limits an official’s authority, a facility’s right to remove or bar a person, an affiliated league’s rules, or WYBA’s ability to take reasonable action to protect participants.
Request for Reconsideration
A person receiving a suspension longer than one game may request reconsideration in writing within seven calendar days. The request should identify a material factual error, new information or a reason the consequence is disproportionate. A Board member not materially involved in the original decision should participate in the review when practical. The restriction remains in effect during review unless WYBA states otherwise. The Board’s written decision is final, subject to any controlling league process.
Acknowledgment
By registering, coaching, volunteering, participating in or attending a WYBA event, each person agrees to comply with this Policy. Parents and guardians are responsible for reviewing the Policy with their players and with family members or guests who attend on their behalf.
This policy will be updated as needed without notice.
